Happy New Year 2022 and First Dream

Hatsuyume is the first dream of the new year, and depending on its content, the fortune of the year has been foreseen. “1. Mt Fuji, 2. hawk, and 3.eggplant” (Ichifuji Nitaka Sannasubi) is a Japanese proverb that has been ranked as auspicious among the things you dream of.

Dreams have been emphasized as a dream judgment since ancient times. In Egypt, a record of dream judgment is left in the “Chester Beati Bible Papyrus Manuscript” during the 12th dynasty (c. 1991 to 1782 BC). In “Iliad” by the ancient Greek bard Homer (end of the 8th century BC), King Agamemnon decided his subsequent actions with the dream brought by the messenger of Zeus and won the battle. Dream fortune-telling was also preached in ancient India’s Atharvaveda (5th century BC), and We know from the nameplate left by Ashurbanipal (reigning 668-627 BC), the king of the Neo-Assyrian Kingdom, they also performed dream fortune-telling in Babylonia. The Old Testament is also full of descriptions of the dreams of the Prophets.

In the ancient Orient, dreams are traditionally based on (1) true, realized dreams from God, (2) evil and false dreams brought about by the devil, and (3) personal thoughts, desires, and physical conditions. It can be divided into three things that are brought about. In the Islamic world, the emphasis is on the dream of (1), and in the Islamic world, the dream is supposed to give prophecy, advice, and warning. Even in the Islamic holy book Quran, dreams appear as divine announcements and foretells about the future.

Dreams are often treated as a source of literature in the Islamic world. Tanuhi (940/1-94), an Arab literary and legal scholar, wrote “Joy after Sadness,” a collection of anecdotes of people who believed in dreams and were led to happiness. There are many works dealing with dreams in world literature nowadays in the Middle East. For example,  Nobel Prize-winning Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz (1911-2006) wrote a short edit, “I Saw as the Sleeper Sees”.

Iran’s contemporary poet Sohrab Sepehri (1928-1980) has a passage of poetry like the one below, which is based on a dream.

“Where is the friend’s home?”

Heavens paused a bit!

A passerby bestowed

the branch of light between the lips

to the darkness of the sands

And then pointed the fingers

to a poplar tree

and said:

“Before the tree”

There’s a garden-alley

greener than God’s dream!

Where love is as blue as the feathers of honesty

I want to have a dream full of green and light in the new year.

謹賀新年２０２２年と初夢

　初夢は新年最初に見る夢で、その内容によってその年の運勢を占ってきた。「一富士二鷹三茄子」は日本のことわざで、夢に見るものの中で縁起の良いものの順位とされてきた。

夢は古代から夢判断として重視されてきた。エジプトでは第１２王朝（紀元前１９９１年頃 ～１７８２年頃）の時代『チェスター・ベアティ聖書パピルス写本』の中に夢判断の記録が残されている。古代ギリシアの吟遊詩人ホメロス（紀元前８世紀末）の『イーリアス』の中でアガメムノン王はゼウスの神の使いがもたらした夢で彼のその後の行動を決定し、戦さに勝利する。古代インドの『アタルヴァ・ヴェーダ』（紀元前５世紀）でも夢占いが説かれ、バビロニアでも夢占いが行われていたことは新アッシリア王国時代の王アッシュールバニパル（在位紀元前６６８～６２７年）が残した銘板からもわかっている。『旧約聖書』にも預言者たちの夢に関する記述があふれている。

　古代オリエントなどでは、伝統的に夢は、（１）神からもたらされる真実の、実現する夢、（２）悪魔がもたらす邪悪で、虚偽の夢、（３）個人の思いや欲望、身体状態によってもたらされるものの３つに分けられる。イスラム世界で重視されるのは（１）の夢で、イスラム世界では特に夢は預言や助言、警告を与えるものとされた。イスラムの聖典コーランでも夢は神からのお告げや未来に関する予告として現れる。

　夢はイスラム世界の文学の素材として扱われることが多い。アラブの文学者・法学者であったタヌーヒー（９４０／１～９４）は、夢を信じて幸福に導かれた人々の逸話を集めた『悲しみのあとの喜び』を著し、現代の中東イスラム世界の文学でも夢を扱った作品は多く、ノーベル文学賞を受賞したエジプトの作家ナギーブ・ムフフーズ（１９１１～２００６）は短編集『眠る者が見る夢を私は見た』を書いている。

　イランの現代詩人ソフラーブ・セペフリー（１９２８～１９８０）は、夢を題材にした下のような詩の一節がある。

「友だちのうちはどこ？」

空は静止した

通りかかった男は口にくわえた光の枝を暗闇に与え

白いポプラのほうを指して言った

「あの木の手前に　神の夢よりも緑濃き小道がある

そこで愛は真実の羽よりも青い」
