“Light is from the east” -Expectations for 2022
Tomorrow, the new year 2022 will begin. It is said that the first sunrise can be expected in good weather on the Pacific side. The Japanese pray for the health and good luck of the year at the first sunrise. In ancient Iran and elsewhere, the sun is thought to make us feel the joy and hope of living, peace and friendship, and such feelings may still remain today.
“Light is from the East” means that the civilization of the world has risen to the Orient (east) such as Egypt and Mesopotamia. From 3000 BC to the great conquest of Alexander the Great is considered to be the era of ancient Orient civilization. The Orient civilization brought about astronomy, the calendar, and the 12-ary system (latitude, longitude, clock), and the Islamic civilization that succeeded it introduced the Greek and Iranian arts such as philosophy, medicine, and science from Spain and Sicily to the West. It became the Italian Renaissance and blossomed.
Monotheism has developed into Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and is worshiped by many people in the world today, and the alphabet that we Japanese use as Roman letters begins with the Phoenicians. The Phoenicians were a commercial people that flourished in the ancient Mediterranean, and under the influence of Egypt, Babylonia, and Crete, created a city alliance led by leading cities such as Ugarit (on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, now in the Syrian city of Las Shamura) and Byblos.
The alphabet is said to have its origin in Semitic characters invented in Syria and Palestine around 2000 BC. In particular, the Phoenician alphabet was introduced to the Greeks from 1000 BC to 700 BC, and the Greeks added vowels to the Phoenician alphabet to create the Greek alphabet, which became Latin and Russian alphabets.
After that, it was the era of great voyages and the era when the West, which had undergone the Industrial Revolution, dominated the world, but it was Japan that shined light from the east in modern times and shined light on the Islamic world of the Middle East in the ancient Near East.
In Iran, after the Russo-Japanese War, Hossein Ali Tajel Shirazi wrote “Mikado Name (The Book of the Emperor)”, praising Japan for shedding new light on the world and driving out the long darkness of ignorance.

Prince Shotoku (574-622) dispatched a mission to Sui dynasty in China , and the national book said “Emperor of the place where the sun rises”. I want Japan to become a country that gives hope to the world.
The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
「光は東方より」 ―２０２２年への期待
明日、新しい年、２０２２年が始まる。初日の出は太平洋側では好天で期待ができるという。日本人は初日の出に一年の健康と幸運を祈願する。古代イランなどでは太陽は生きることの喜びや希望、平和や友好を感じさせてくれるものと考えられ、そうした感情は現在でも残っているだろう。

「光は東方より」は世界の文明はエジプト、メソポタミアなどオリエント（東方）に興ったという意味だ。紀元前３０００年からアレクサーダー大王の大征服までが古代オリエント文明の時代とされる。オリエント文明は、天文学、暦、１２進法（緯度・経度・時計）をもたらし、その後を継いだイスラム文明は哲学、医学、科学などギリシアやイランの学芸をスペインやシチリア島などから西洋に伝え、それがイタリア・ルネサンスとなって開花した。
一神教はユダヤ（イスラエル）でキリスト教、イスラムに発達し、今日世界の多くの人々が信仰しているし、私たち日本人もローマ字として使うアルファベットもフェニキア人に始まっている。フェニキア人は古代地中海に栄えた商業民族で、エジプト、バビロニア、クレタの影響の下に、ウガリット（地中海東岸、現在のシリアの都市ラス・シャムラにあった）、ビブロスなど有力市が指導する都市同盟を築いていった。
アルファベットは、紀元前２０００年頃にシリア・パレスチナで発明されたセム系文字に起源をもつとされる。特にフェニキアのアルファベットは前１０００年から前７００年頃ギリシア人に伝えられ、ギリシア人はフェニキア文字に母音を加えて、ギリシア・アルファベットをつくり、それがラテン文字やロシア文字となっていった。
その後、大航海の時代や産業革命を経た西洋が世界を支配する時代となったが、近代において東方から光を放ち、古代オリエント世界の中東イスラム世界に光を放ったのは、日本だった。
イランでは日露戦争後、ホセイン・アリー・タージェル・シーラーズイーが、『ミカド・ナーメ（天皇の書）』を書き、日本が世界に新しい光を投げかけ、長い無知の暗闇を駆逐したと日本を賛美した。
東方からまた何という太陽が昇ってくるのだろう。
眠っていた人間は誰もがその場から跳ね起きる。
文明の夜明けが日本から拡がったとき、
この昇る太陽で全世界が明るく照らし出された。
日本で聖徳太子（５７４～６２２年）が遣隋使を派遣し、その国書に「日出ずる処（ところ）の天子」と書かれていたが、世界に希望を与えるような日本であってほしいと日本人として思う。
