Simon and Garfunkel’s anti-nuclear song “The Sun is Burning
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier this month that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons would be of no use. The reason is that banning nuclear weapons in a treaty that does not include nuclear-weapon states has no effect. It’s like saying that you have no intention of ratifying the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
It is not well known that the world-famous duo Simon and Garfunkel (S & G) have anti-nuclear songs. “The Sun Is Burning” was recorded on S & G’s debut album “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.” (1964) and was released on Columbia Records on October 19, 1964.

So, in the beautiful harmony of S & G, the song that starts with a peaceful and quiet scene turns into a miserable scene after the bombing, which seems to appeal to the fear of nuclear war. In the United States, it is justified that the dropping of nuclear weapons in Hiroshima and Nagasaki helped to end the war early, and when speaking of “No more, Hiroshima”, they are returning “Remember Pearl Harbor”. So, the fear of the nuclear war seems not so imminent among the US people. One can say that nuclear war is the worst environmental destruction.

The song wasn’t made by S & G, but by British folk singer Ian Campbell. In the early 1960s when the song was created, the threat of nuclear war was perceived as urgent. When the Berlin Wall was built in 1961 and the Soviet Union deployed a missile base in Cuba in 1962, the United States blocked Cuba at sea, and the Soviet Union sent warships to break the blockade. The threat of nuclear weapons is such that the Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet (1901-1963) wrote the poem “Dead Girl” with the motif of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and “Japanese Fisherman” in response to the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Incident. It was taken as an urgent thing in the world. In a folk song, Ian Campbell intended to protest the East-West confrontation and raise the world’s anti-nuclear awareness. Campbell was the pioneer of protest songs in the 1960s.
Nuclear war is a serious environmental destruction, and Paul Simon has become more interested in climate change and biodiversity in recent years. “The earth is a jewel, but the jewel is endangered now,” he said. “And when ecosystems are endangered, adjacent ecosystems are endangered by the domino effect and biodiversity could be damaged,” he said. (Global Citizen, March 15, 2017) Climate change such as nuclear war is something we must somehow prevent with human wisdom and effort.

アメリカのブリンケン国務長官は核兵器禁止条約について何の役にも立たないと今月初めに述べた。理由は核保有国が加わっていない条約で核兵器を禁止しても、何の成果も生まないというものだ。これでははなから核兵器禁止条約に批准するつもりがないと言っているようなものだ。
世界的に著名なデュオ、サイモンとガーファンクル（Ｓ＆Ｇ）に反核ソングがあることはあまり知られていない。「太陽は燃えている(The Sun Is Burning)」は、Ｓ＆Ｇのデビュー・アルバム「水曜日の朝、午前３時」に収録されていて、１９６４年１０月１９日にコロンビアレコードからリリースされていた。

捻じ曲げられ 視力を失ったボロボロの人たちが

この楽曲はＳ＆Ｇがつくったものではなく、イギリスのフォーク・シンガーのイアン・キャンベルのものだが、曲が創作された１９６０年代前半は、核戦争の脅威が切実なものとして受け止められていた。１９６１年にはベルリンの壁が築かれ、また１９６２年にはソ連がキューバにミサイル基地を配備すると、アメリカはキューバを海上封鎖し、さらにソ連は海上封鎖を解く目的で軍艦を派遣した。トルコの詩人ナーズム・ヒクメット(１９０１～１９６３年）が広島の原爆投下をモチーフに「死んだ女の子」を、また第５福竜丸事件を受けて「日本の漁夫」という詩を作るなど、核兵器の脅威は切実なものとして世界で受け止められていた。イアン・キャンベルはフォーク・ソングで、東西の対立に抗議し、世界の反核意識を高めることを意図した。キャンベルは１９６０年代のプロテスト・ソングを開拓した人物であった。
核戦争は、重大な環境破壊になるが、ポール・サイモンは、近年は気候変動と生物多様性を護ることに関心を寄せるようになった。彼は、「地球は宝石だが、その宝石は危機に瀕している」と述べた。「そして、生態系が危険にさらされると、隣接する生態系などがドミノ効果で危険にさらされ、生物多様性も損なわれることになる」と述べている。（Global Citizen, March 15, 2017）核戦争のような気候変動は人間の叡智と努力で何とかして防ぎたいものだ。
