　北京オリンピックで小林陵侑だわる傾向にあるが、オリンピックは本来、国際社会に、世界的な協調の精神を教える舞台でもある。

作家・山口瞳が称えた円谷選手

オリンピックの際に日本の国旗「日の丸」をすがすがしい想いで観たのは作家の山口瞳だった。山口瞳は「円谷君　有り難う」（報知新聞）の中で次のように語っている。

「『オリンピックはやっぱり参加することに意義がありますね』と友人が言った。そこで私もマラソンに参加して百万人（の観衆）のなかの一人になった。ゴザを敷いて傘を差して座っているおばあさんがいる。漫画本を何冊も抱え込んだ小学生がいる。ほら見ろ、運動会と同じじゃないか。黒い人、黄色い人、白い人、みんな勝ってもらいたい。これがオリンピック精神である。アカ勝て、シロ勝て、キイロ勝て。・・・円谷君がついに頑張った。ついに日の丸を国立競技場にあげた。戦後になってはじめてまったくなんらの抵抗感なしに全くのいい気持ちで日の丸の旗があがるのを見た。円谷君、ありがとう。」（ＮＨＫ「映像の世紀　プレミアム」より）

オリンピック精神をあらためて教えた小平選手

　前回の平昌オリンピック・スピードスケート女子５００メートル・スピード・スケートでは、金メダルを獲得した小平奈緒選手は、三連覇を目指していた韓国の李相花（イ・サンファ）選手に競技後「リスペクトしているよ」と声をかけ、抱きしめた。また、「これからの人生を充実させたい」とも語った。小平選手のふるまいや発言は日本のためにとった金メダルではないと言っているかのようだった。二人とも国旗をもって会場を滑る姿がぎこちなかったと感じられたのも、本来は国を背負って競技しているのではないことを表現していたかのようであった。

新たな国際主義の出現

ナショナリズムと国際主義は対極にあるが、戦争を経ると、大戦後の国際連盟や国際連合の創設のように、国際主義が強調されてきた。オリンピックは国際主義を唱道し、他方でナショナリズムやそのときどきの政治によっても特徴づけられてきたが、２０１６年にリオ・オリンピックで難民チームも登場するなど新たな国際主義の傾向も現れ、平昌オリンピックでもナイジェリアなど冬季種目との関わりが希薄だったアフリカのチームも初出場した。
