長崎　―被爆の記憶は広く世界に、永遠に／Nagasaki – Memories of the A-bombing spread to the world, forever

今日、８月９日で長崎に原爆が投下されてから７７年が経った。

作家の林京子さん（１９３０～２０１７年）は、１９４５年８月９日に長崎市内の三菱兵器工場に学徒動員中に被爆した。被爆から３０年後、その体験をモチーフに書いた短編『祭りの場』で、芥川賞を受賞した。

　林さんは、長崎の原爆投下から５４年後の１９９９年にアメリカ・ニューメキシコ州トリニティ・サイトを訪ねた。ここは、１９４５年７月１６日に核爆発実験が初めて行われた場所で、この時と同じプルトニウム型の原子爆弾が長崎に投下された。林さんはトリニティ・サイトでカラスなど鳥も飛んでいない様子を見て、広島や長崎より前に原爆の犠牲になった声なき生物がいたことを知った。

「大地の底から、赤い山肌をさらした遠い山脈から、褐色の荒野から、ひたひたと無音

の波が寄せてきて、私は身を縮めた。どんなにか熱かっただろう――。（中略）被爆者の先

輩がここにいた。泣くことも叫ぶこともできないで、ここにいた。／私の目に涙があふれた」

核兵器が危険なのは、いうまでもなく一つの軍事行動で、途方もなく多数の人間を殺傷することが可能だからである。１９４０年９月から４１年５月にかけ、ドイツ空軍は空爆でイギリス市民４万３０００人を殺害したが、それに対し、広島では１５キロトンの原爆一発で７万人が一瞬にして亡くなった。さらにその後に原爆症で亡くなった人を含めると、広島の犠牲者は１４万人に到達すると見積もられている。

イギリス王立国際問題研究所〈チャタムハウス〉のパトリシア・ルイス氏は、ロシアが核兵器を使用するとすれば、核による報復が予想されるＮＡＴＯ加盟国ではなくて、ウクライナに対して小規模な威力の使用することになるだろうと述べている。ロシアの小型戦術核の威力は「ワシントン・ポスト」によれば、５キロトンで、広島型原爆の３分の１だが、それでもなお多数の犠牲が出ることが危惧される。

長崎で被爆し、白血病で亡くなった医師の永井隆氏は次のように語っている。

「実戦を知らぬ将校が自己の名誉心を満足さすために、何も知らない部下を叱咤して戦場に駆り立てる傾向がありはしないでしょうか。実戦というものは残酷なものですよ。」――永井隆『長崎の鐘』

　永井博士の言葉はプーチン大統領が知るべきものだ。ウクライナに侵攻し、また核兵器の使用を口にするプーチン大統領は戦場や被爆による惨状への想像力に著しく欠けている。

Today, August 9th, marks the 77th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

Writer Kyoko Hayashi (1930-2017) was exposed to the bomb on August 9, 1945, while she was working as a student at the Mitsubishi weapons factory in Nagasaki. Thirty years after the atomic bombing, she won the Akutagawa Prize for his short story “Matsuri no Ba”, which was based on that experience.

Hayashi visited the Trinity Site in New Mexico, USA in 1999, 54 years after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. This was the site of the first nuclear explosion test on July 16, 1945, when the same plutonium-type atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. When Ms. Hayashi saw that no crows or other birds were flying at the Trinity Site, she learned that before Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there were voiceless creatures that had fallen victim to the atomic bombings.

Nuclear weapons are dangerous, of course, because they are capable of killing and wounding a staggering number of people in a single military action. Between September 1940 and May 1941, Luftwaffe airstrikes killed 43,000 British citizens, while a single 15-kiloton atomic bomb killed 70,000 people instantly in Hiroshima. Including those who later died of atomic bomb disease, the total number of victims in Hiroshima is estimated to reach 140,000.

Patricia Lewis of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, believes that if Russia were to use nuclear weapons, it would use small amounts of force against Ukraine rather than against NATO members, where nuclear retaliation would be expected. says it will do. Russia’s small tactical nuclear bomb has a yield of 5 kilotons, one-third that of the Hiroshima-type atomic bomb, according to The Washington Post, but it is feared that it will still cause a large number of casualties.

Doctor Takashi Nagai, who was exposed to the atomic bombing in Nagasaki and died of leukemia, said:

“Isn’t there a tendency for officers who don’t know actual combat to satisfy their sense of honor by scolding their ignorant subordinates and driving them into the battlefield? Actual combat is cruel.” Takashi Nagai “Bell of Nagasaki”

Dr. Nagai’s words should be known by President Putin, who has invaded Ukraine and threatened to use nuclear weapons, lacks the imagination of battlefields and the devastation caused by the atomic bombing.
