昨日、８月１５日、７７年目の「終戦記念日」、政府主催の全国戦没者追悼式が行われ、天皇陛下は「戦後の長きにわたる平和な歳月に思いを致しつつ、過去を顧み、深い反省の上に立って、再び戦争の惨禍が繰り返されぬことを切に願い、戦陣に散り戦禍に倒れた人々に対し、全国民と共に、心から追悼の意を表し、世界の平和と我が国の一層の発展を祈ります。」と述べた。

作家の故野坂昭如氏は、自らの短編小説でアニメ映画にもなった「火垂るの墓」について「幼い妹の世話は父や母のように出来ない、妹に食べさせるつもりの食糧まで自分が食べてしまい生後１年半の妹を死なせてしまったと現在でも悔やんでいるのです。妹が自分の手の中で死んでいったこと、亡骸を自分で火葬したこと、その骨をドロップ缶に入れていたこと、この辺りのエピソードは全部実話です。」と語っている。
「火垂るの墓」の高畑勲監督は、ミッシェル・オスロ監督のアニメ映画「アズールとアスマール」（日本公開は２００７年）の日本語版監修もしている。この映画について、高畑監督は、下のように解説した。
「アズールとアスマール」の主眼とは何か。それは、異なった人種や民族、文化圏などの間にある反目や偏見を取り除き、人々が相互理解と融和に向かうための基盤づくりに役立つことを、とびきり美しく面白く語ろう、という狙いです。（中略）フランスで迫害されたユダヤ人学者も、迫害のない寛容なイスラム世界では、同じよそ者扱いながら賢者・医者として生きられる。粗野で閉鎖的な中世ヨーロッパと、交流によって繁栄する中世イスラム世界。
反目や偏見をなくすためには個人と個人の付き合いこそ大切、と、こういう対比のなかで、オスロ氏はじつに個性的で面白い人物たちを活躍させます。そこがこの作品の一番の魅力です。」
物語は同じアラブ人の乳母に育てられ領主の息子アズールと乳母の息子アスマールの話だが、ミシェル・オスロ監督はこの映画の制作意図について、
「一見対極に立っている２人が、実は、話し合えば言葉の壁すらも魅力の一つになって分かり合えるということを説明するために、北アフリカという場所を選びました。フランスに住んでいる移民の大半は北アフリカ出身なんです」と述べた。
フランスなどヨーロッパ世界では、ムスリム系移民の排斥を唱え、イスラムに対する偏見をもつ極右勢力が台頭し、それによってもたらされる疎外感が「イスラム国」などに移民の若者たちを向かわせることになっている。中東イスラム世界の地図を見渡すと、多くの国々が紛争や暴力を抱え、「破局的」ともいえる状態にあるが、「偏見や反目」を超えて個人や国家がつき合っていくことが、世界の融和や安定を築くことになると思うが、それはヘイトなど危うい兆候が見られる日本についても言えることである。

The late writer Akiyuki Nosaka said of his short story, “Grave of the Fireflies,” which was also turned into an animated film, “I can’t take care of my younger sister like my father or mother. Director Isao Takahata of “Grave of the Fireflies” also supervised the Japanese version of the animated film “Azur and Asmar” (released in Japan in 2007) directed by Michel Oslo. Director Takahata commented on this film as follows.
“What is the main focus of ‘Azur and Asmar’? The aim is to remove antagonism and prejudice between people of different races, ethnicities, and cultural spheres, and to tell stories that are extremely beautiful and interesting, and that will help build a foundation for mutual understanding and harmony among people. (Omitted) Even Jewish scholars who were persecuted in France can live as sages and doctors while being treated as outsiders in the tolerant Islamic world where there is no persecution. Medieval Europe, which was crude and closed, and the medieval Islamic world, which prospered through exchanges.
In order to eliminate antagonism and prejudice, it is important to have a relationship between individuals, and in this contrast, Mr. Oslo brings out unique and interesting characters. That is the main charm of this work.”
The story is about Azur, the lord’s son, and Asmar, the nanny’s son, both raised by the same Arab nanny.
“I chose North Africa in order to explain that the two seemingly polar opposites can, in fact, be able to understand each other through the language barrier. I live in France. Most of the immigrants are from North Africa,” he said.
In France and other parts of Europe, there is a rise of far-right forces that advocate the exclusion of Muslim immigrants and are prejudiced against Islam. . Looking at the map of the Islamic world in the Middle East, we can see that many countries are in a state of “catastrophic” with conflicts and violence. I think it will build harmony and stability, and the same can be said for Japan, where there are signs of danger such as hate.
