カザフスタンの国際的知名度・認知度を上げた映画「ボラット」
『ボラット 栄光ナル国家カザフスタンのためのアメリカ文化学習』（Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan）（２００６年）は、カザフスタンのジャーナリストのボラットがタイトルの通りカザフ情報省の命令によってアメリカの文化や社会をレポートするというものだった。カザフスタンが男尊女卑の国であると紹介され、主人公のボラットもアメリカのフェミニスト団体を訪れ、「女性は脳が小さいので教育は無駄」などと言って女性たちを怒らせる。また、カザフスタンでは毎年「ユダヤ人追い祭り」が開かれるなど、カザフスタンは反ユダヤ主義が根強く定着しているようにも描かれ、カザフスタンを茶化す内容が笑いをとっていた。
２０２０年１０月に続編である『続・ボラット 栄光ナル国家だったカザフスタンのためのアメリカ貢ぎ物計画』（Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan）がアマゾン・プライムから公開された。ストーリーは、トランプ大統領、ロシアのプーチン大統領、北朝鮮の金正恩委員長、ブラジルのボルソナロ大統領など強権的な指導者たちの仲間入りをしたいカザフスタンのヌルスルタン・ナザルバイエフ大統領（１９９１年から２０１９年まで実際に大統領であった）はトランプ大統領の歓心を買うために、ボラットにトランプ政権の要人への貢ぎ物を託すが、その貢ぎ物はボラットの娘トゥーターになる。
ペンス副大統領が「保守政治活動協議会 (CPAC：The Conservative Political Action Conference)」に出席している機会に接触を試みるが失敗し、トランプ大統領の法律顧問ルディ・ジュリアーニに貢ぐ相手が変更される。実はボラットはナザルバイエフ大統領によって、世界中にCOVID-19を拡散するためにウイルスを体に注入されており、米国への船旅で立ち寄った国々や米国では新型コロナウイルスの感染が深刻になっていった。

このカザフスタンをコケにするような映画は、アメリカとカザフスタンの外交問題に発展する危惧もあり、実際にカザフ国内には反発する動きもあったが、現在はカザフスタンの認知度を高めたとカザフ観光庁などから絶賛され、映画の中でボラットがアメリカ社会を見て頻繁に発する「Very Nice!」というフレーズがカザフ観光のスローガンになった。

カザフスタンの自然、食事、人々は「Very Nice!」だと語るカザフスタン観光庁関係者も現れた。権威主義体制のカザフスタンでは観光庁の方針にも大統領など政府首脳の意向が反映されているに違いなく、自国へのブラックユーモアも外交のプラス材料として強調、利用されるようになった。『ボラット』は日ごろニュースでもあまり取り上げられることがない中央アジアの国カザフスタンの国際的知名度・認知度を上げることもなった。死者を出す反政府デモへの弾圧で国際的に報道されるよりよいだろう。

In order to buy President Trump’s joy, he entrusts Borat with a tribute to the key figures of the Trump administration, who becomes Borat’s daughter Tutar.
