日本人作家が観た宗教共存の理想　－イスラム・スペイン

　作家の堀田善衛（１９１８～１９９８年）は、フランスの作家サルトルが人権を唱える国のフランスが植民地を抑圧することに反対し、アルジェリア独立戦争（１９５４～６２年）を支持したように、フランス文学者でもあった堀田は独立運動の中心にあった「民族解放戦線（ＦＬＮ）」に共感をもった。

　堀田善衛は、放射能に汚染された南の島の守護神であった怪獣が文明社会に憤り、日本を襲うという映画「モスラ」の原作者でもあった。

　アニメの宮崎駿監督が最も尊敬する人物とされ、堀田善衛の「空の空なればこそ」の中の「汝の手に堪うることは力を尽くしてこれをなせ」という言葉を座右の銘にしているという。

湾岸戦争は金だけ出すでよい

湾岸戦争（１９９１年）についても「国是（憲法）」というものを、いたずらにいじってはいけない。私は銭出すだけでいいと思うよ。経済国家だもの。銭こだけで何が悪い」（堀田善衛・司馬遼太郎・宮崎駿『時代の風音』朝日文庫、１９９７年）

　その湾岸戦争の直後、サミュエル・ハンチントンは「文明の衝突論」を出し、世界の各宗教文明は対立を深めていくことを説いたが、堀田善衛はイスラム・スペインに文明の人類の共存の姿を見出した。

「イスラム王朝は、ユダヤ教徒に対しても差別しなかった。むしろ彼らを重用したのであった。だから、イスラムのスペインにあって、キリスト教徒から自発的にイスラムに改宗した人もいれば、両者の通婚も自由であった。こうして時代がうつって行くと、イスラム教徒もキリスト教徒も次第に、スペイン人としてのアイデンティティをもつようになり、両者ともに近代スペイン語の先祖であるロマンス語とアラビア語の二カ国語を話すようになり、これが複合し熟成して行って、語彙の１０パーセントがアラビア語源、あるいはそれとの複合語である現行スペイン語が出来ていったのである。イスラム教徒は如何なる意味でも“外敵”ではなかった。（中略）

　ヨーロッパの著名な文学作品の原型はアラブ・ペルシアにある

　そうしてコルドバ、セビーリア、トレドは、ヨーロッパにおける初期ルネッサンスの、学問の中心であった。ヨーロッパの学者たちは、まずここでアラブ語に訳されたギリシャの哲学、科学などの諸学問を学んだのである。それらのアラブ語文献をラテン語に重訳することにはげんだのであった。ヨーロッパ文明の根幹をなすいくつかの説話、たとえばゲーテの『フアウスト』。シャイクスピアの「じゃじゃ馬ならし」、アンゼルセンの『裸の王様』などの原型は、すべてペルシャ、アラブから出てスペイン経由でヨーロッパに入ったものであった。・・・

Writer Yoshie Hotta (1918-1998) opposed France, a country where French writer Jean-Paul Sartre advocated human rights, to suppress the colony, and supported the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62). Hotta, who was also a literary writer, sympathized with the “National Liberation Front (FLN)” that was at the center of the independence movement.

Yoshie Hotta was also the original author of the movie “Mothra”, in which a monster that was the guardian deity of a radioactively contaminated southern island was indignant at civilized society and attacked Japan.

Director Hayao Miyazaki of the anime considered Yoshie Hotta to be the most respected person, and the words “Do your best to endure your hands” in Yoshie Hotta’s “If the sky is sky” are used as Miyazaki’s inscription.

Even in the Gulf War (1991), the “national policy (constitution)” should not be tampered with unnecessarily. I think Japan should pay only money, not have to offer Self-Defense Force personnel. Immediately after the Gulf War, Samuel Huntington issued the “Clash of Civilizations” and preached that each religious civilization in the world would deepen the conflict, but Yoshie Hotta found the coexistence of humankind in Islam and Spain.

“The Islamic dynasty did not discriminate against Jews either. Rather, they valued them. So, in Islamic Spain, some Christians voluntarily converted to Islam. Marriage among different religion was also free. As the times went by, both Muslims and Christians gradually became Spanish identities, both spoke romance, the ancestors of modern Spanish and Arabic. As they began to speak the language, which was compounded and matured, 10% of the vocabulary came from the Arabic source, or the current Spanish, which is a compound with it. Muslims were not foreign enemy in any sense…

Cordoba, Seville and Toledo were then the academic centers of the early Renaissance in Europe. European scholars first learned Greek philosophy, science, and other disciplines translated in Arabic there. Then they were translating those Arab documents into Latin. Some of prototypes of the tales that form the basis of European civilization, such as Goethe’s “Faust”, Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” and Andersen’s “Naked King” all came from Persia and Arab and entered Europe via Spain.・ ・ ・
