インドのネルー首相（ジャワハルラール・ネルー、首相在任は１９４７年～６４年）が唱和２４年（１９４９年）上野の動物園にインド象の「インディラ」を寄付したというエピソードにあらためて接した。
上野動物園（正式名称：東京都恩賜上野動物園）は、１８８２年に開園された日本で最も古い動物園で、また日本で最も人口が多い首都東京にあるということもあって、国内では年間入場者数が最も多い動物園だ。
下はインディラを贈呈するに際してネルー首相が日本の子供たちに贈ったメッセージだ。
「私は皆さんがお望みになったインドの象を一頭お贈りすることをとても嬉しく思います。この象はみごとな象で、とても行儀が良く、そして聞くところによりますと、体に縁起の良いしるしを多くもっているとのことです。皆さんは、この象が私からではなく、インドの子供たちからあなた方、日本の子供たちへの、贈物であると思って接してください。 世界中の子供たちは、互いに多くの点で似かよっています。ところが大人になると変わり出して、そして不幸なことは、時々喧嘩をしたりします。私たちはこのような大人たちの喧嘩を止めさせなければなりません。そして私の願いは、インドの子供たちや日本の子供たちが成長した時には、それぞれの自分たちの偉大な祖国のためばかりにではなく、アジアと世界全体の平和と協力のためにも貢献してほしいというものです。（後略）」

東京はすでに昭和１７年４月に米軍による初めての空襲を受けていたが、上野動物園では、昭和１８年８月、ライオン、虎、ヒョウなどの猛獣は逃亡すると危険ということで殺処分された。それに伴って２頭の象も処分された。
戦争が終わると上野動物園には象がいなかった。昭和２４年５月、台東区の子供議会（戦後民主主義教育の一貫として行われた学習活動）は「上野動物園に象がほしい」と決議したが、台東区の子供たちの想いを知ったインド人貿易商のＨ・Ｋ・ニヨギ氏は、ネルー首相に宛てた子供たちのメッセージや図画を携え、帰国してネルー首相に台東区の子供たちの願いを伝えた。ネルー首相は、日本の子供たちの切なる想いに応じて、自分の娘の名前をつけた象のインディラを上野動物園に贈ることに快く応じた。インディラがカルカッタを出港したのが、８月２９日で、９月２３日に芝浦港に到着した。日本の子供たちの情熱もすごいが、ネルー首相をはじめとするインド政府関係者たちのバイタリティにも特筆すべきものがあると思う。

昭和４０年から４１年にかけてインドが大飢饉に見舞われると、インディラを贈られたお返しに、台東区町会連合会はインドへの義援金を送ることを決定し、４１年５月、台東区役所で総額３４３万１４０３円の義援金がインド大使館関係者に渡された。『台東区民新聞』（昭和４１年６月５日付）は、「江戸っ子の人情でかたい（インドとの）友好の絆が結ばれた」と記した。
In 1949, Indian Prime Minister Nehru (Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as Prime Minister from 1947 to 1964) donated an Indian elephant, Indira, to the Ueno Zoo.
Ueno Zoo (official name: Tokyo Metropolitan Ueno Zoo) is Japan’s oldest zoo, having opened in 1882. It is also located in Tokyo, the capital city with the largest population in Japan. It is the zoo with the highest annual number of visitors in Japan.
Below is the message Prime Minister Nehru gave to Japanese children when presenting Indira.
“I am very pleased to give you one of the Indian elephants you have requested. This elephant is a fine elephant, very well-behaved, and is said to have auspicious signs on its body. Please treat this elephant as a gift not from me, but from the children of India to you, the children of Japan.Children around the world are similar to each other in many ways, but when they grow up, they start to change, and unfortunately, they sometimes fight.We have to stop these fights. And it is my hope that when the children of India and the children of Japan grow up, they will contribute not only to their great homeland, but also to the peace and cooperation of Asia and the world as a whole. I want you to do it.(Omitted)”
Tokyo had already suffered its first air raid by the U.S. military in April 1942, but at Ueno Zoo, in August 1943, lions, tigers, leopards and other wild animals were slaughtered because they were dangerous if they escaped. Two elephants were also culled.
After the war, there were no elephants in Ueno Zoo. In May 1949, the Taito Ward Children’s Council (learning activities carried out as part of post-war democratic education) made a resolution that “I want an elephant in Ueno Zoo.” Mr. H.K. Niyogi, a human trader, returned to Japan with the children’s messages and drawings addressed to Prime Minister Nehru and conveyed the wishes of the children of Taito Ward to Prime Minister Nehru. Prime Minister Nehru graciously agreed to donate the elephant Indira, named after his daughter, to the Ueno Zoo in response to the wishes of Japanese children. Indira left Calcutta on August 29th and arrived at Shibaura Port on September 23rd. The passion of Japanese children is amazing, but I think the vitality of Indian government officials, including Prime Minister Nehru, is noteworthy.

When India suffered a great famine from 1960 to 1961, the Taito Ward Federation of Neighborhood Associations decided to send donations to India in return for receiving Indira. In May 1941, a total of 3,431,403 yen in donations was handed over to Indian Embassy officials at the Taito Ward Office. The Taito Citizens’ Newspaper (June 5, 1966) wrote, “The humanity of the people of Edo formed a strong bond of friendship (with India).”
