George Harrison’s “Give me love” and the universal word “God’s love”
By worshiping the first sunrise in Japan in the coming New Year, we pray to Toshigami for the happiness and good harvest of the year. Japan’s nickname is “The Land of the Rising Sun,” but it seems universal that sunrise gives people hope and a bright future outlook, and the Beatles song “Here Comes the Sun” written and composed by George Harrison, and it seems that the sun feels relieved by repeating simple lyrics.

George Harrison’s song, which reached number one on the hit chart in June 1973, is “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” (the Japanese title is “Give Me Love”). The lyrics are as follows.

Help me cope, with this heavy load
Trying to, touch and reach you with,
Heart and soul
At the suggestion of George Harrison of The Beatles, the Bangladesh Refugee Relief Concert was held at Madison Square Garden in New York in August 1971. Bangladesh was East Pakistan, but after the independence of India and Pakistan, it was West Pakistan, which is now Pakistan, that took the lead in politics and economy. Major investment and military posts were focused on West Pakistan. From March 1971, strikes and riots occurred in East Pakistan, then West Pakistan intervened in the military and a large number of refugees occurred. It is estimated that 7 million Bangladeshi people had been refugeed due to the conflict and the heavy rain disaster the previous year and 250,000 civilians had been slaughtered by West Pakistan’s military operations. George Harrison’s concert was exactly in response to God’s love.
Although Harrison may have been aware of the Christian god, “God’s love” can be said to be the underlying concept of religion, which is especially emphasized in monotheistic Islam and Judaism.

In Islam, the name of God is “Rahman” and “Rahim”, which show love of God for His creations, but conflicts and violence in human society ruin God’s charity. In order to respond to love of God, people must be mercy for those in need, such as George Harrison’s “Bangladesh Concert.”
Andalus’ Islamic mystical thinker and poet Ibn Arabi (1165-1240) describes God’s commandments against violence as follows:
David desire to build the Holy House and did so several times. However, every time he finished it, if fell down in ruins. When he complained of that to God, God revealed to him, “My House shall not be raised by the hand of one who has spilt blood. David then said, “O Lord, was it not done in Your cause?” God said to him, “Indeed, but are they not My servants?”
ジョージ・ハリスンの「愛をください」と世界に普遍的な言葉「神の愛」
もうすぐ新年で日本では初日の出を拝むことで年神様にその年の幸せや豊作などを祈る。日本の美称は「日出ずる国」だが、日の出が人々に希望、明るい未来の見通しを与えるというのは世界的に普遍のように思え、ビートルズの楽曲にも「ヒア・カムズ・サン」というジョージ・ハリスンの作詞作曲したものがあり、単純な歌詞の繰り返しによって太陽に安堵の想いを感ずるかのようだ。

１９７３年６月にヒットチャート１位となったジョージ・ハリスンの歌に“Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” （邦題は「ギヴ・ミー・ラヴ」）がある。その歌詞は次のようなものだ。
私に愛をください
地上の平和を与えてください

ビートルズのジョージ・ハリソンの提案でバングラデシュ難民救済コンサートがニューヨークのマジソン・スクエア・ガーデンで開かれたのは、１９７１年８月だった。バングラデシュは東パキスタンだったが、インドとパキスタンの独立後、政治や経済の主導権を握ったのは現在のパキスタンである西パキスタンだった。投資や軍の主要なポストは西パキスタンに重点的に配分された。１９７１年３月から東パキスタンではストや暴動が発生したが、これに西パキスタンが軍事介入して大量の難民が発生した。紛争、また前年の豪雨災害で、バングラデシュの難民は７００万人が難民化して、また西パキスタンの軍事作戦で２５万人の市民が虐殺されたと見積もられている。ジョージ・ハリスンのコンサートはまさに神の愛に応えるものだった。
ハリスンが意識したのはキリスト教の神かもしれないが、「神の愛」は、特に一神教のイスラムやユダヤ教でも強調される宗教の根幹にある概念と言ってもよいだろう。

イスラムでは神の名前は「ラフマーン（慈愛あまねき者）」「ラヒーム（慈悲深き者）」として神の被創造物に対する愛を示すが、人間社会の紛争、暴力は神の慈愛を台無しにする行いだ。また、神への愛に応えるためにもジョージ・ハリスンの「バングラデシュ・コンサート」のように、困窮する人々に対する慈愛がなければならない。アンダルスのイスラム神秘主義思想家、詩人のイブン・アラビー（１１６５～１２４０年）は暴力に対する神の戒めを次のように表現している。
ダヴィデは神殿の建築にとりかかったけれども、
神殿は常に倒壊し、決して完成されることはなかった。
ダヴィデが神に訴えた時、神は次のような啓示をダヴィデに下した。
「私の神殿は血を流した者の手によっては建てられない。」
ダヴィデが、「しかし、私はあなたの為に殺したのです。」と言うと、
神は、「確かにその通りだ。しかし殺された者たちも、また私の僕ではなかったのか。」とお答えになった。
