中村哲医師は「平和と相互依存」が人類共通の文化遺産と説いた

２００１年３月にアフガニスタンのタリバンがバーミヤンの大仏を破壊すると中村哲医師が代表を務めるＰＭＳ（ペシャワール会医療サービス）のアフガニスタン人職員から「（破壊は）遺憾です。職員一同、全イスラム教徒に代わって謝罪します。他人の信仰を冒とくするのはわれわれの気持ちではありません。日本がアフガン人を誤解せぬよう望みます」という手紙が中村医師の元に届いた。これに応えて中村医師は、職員との朝礼の訓示で次のように述べた。

「われわれは諸君を見捨てない。人類の文化とは何か。人類の文明とは何か。考える機会を与えてくれた神に感謝する。真の『人類共通の文化遺産』とは、平和・相互扶助の精神でなくて何であろう。それは我々の心の中に築かれ、子々孫々伝えられるべきものである」（「学士会会報」８３２号〔２００１年〕）

　中村医師はクリスチャンだが、キリスト教では「平和を実現する人々は、幸いである」（「マタイによる福音書」５章９節）と説かれる。また、平和・相互扶助は、イスラムでも宗教の根幹を成す概念である。イスラム世界の挨拶は簡略には「サラーム（平和）」であり、より長く表現すれば「アッ＝サラーム・アライクム（あなたがたの上に平安がありますように）」といい、平和は常に信徒たちが意識する信条である。相互扶助は、イスラムでは貧者や未亡人、旅人を保護するために必要な宗教税を「喜捨（ザカート）」として宗教上の義務行為として定めている。相互扶助はキリスト教の「平等」「隣人愛」にも見られる。

　イスラムでは信仰の対象となる神は「アッラー」だが、これはアラビア語で「神」を意味する言葉で、アラビア語に訳されたキリスト教の聖書でも神は「アッラー」と表現される。つまり、イスラムもキリスト教も同じ神を信仰するということになる。

光、それははるか彼方から届けられる。

あなたがランプに眼を奪われ続けるのであれば、

あなたはあなた自身を奪われてしまう。

ランプの種類は数限りなく、各人の嗜好もまた然り。

あなたの視線を光に転じ、光そのものを見つめよ。

そうすれば、あなたは地上における事象に特有の、

二元性の限界から解き放たれるだろう。

そのようにして新たな視線を獲得すれば、

イスラム教徒、ゾロアスター教徒、ユダヤ教徒の違いは、

依って立つ位置の違いに過ぎないことが理解できよう。

中村哲医師はキリスト教プロテスタント系バプテスト派のクリスチャンだったが、平和や相互依存は人類普遍的な価値観である。現地の人々の信仰や価値観に最大限の敬意を表しながら活動を続けた。キリスト教でも互いにいたわり合いながら平和に至ることが教えられる。ユダヤ教でも日々の挨拶が「シャローム（平和）」であるように平和が重んじられ、ユダヤ教の信徒相互にはツェダカという、英語のチャリティ、アラビア語のサダカに相当する救貧税があり、ユダヤ教徒には貧しい人々を助ける義務がある。

When the Taliban in Afghanistan destroyed the Buddha of Bamyan in March 2001, an Afghan PMS (Peshawar-kai medical service) staff member, represented by Dr. Tetsu Nakamura said, “(Destruction) is regrettable. I apologize on behalf of the staff and the religious people. It is not our feeling to blame the faith of others. I hope Japan does not misunderstand the Afghans. ” In response to this, Dr. Nakamura stated in the morning assembly instruction with the staff as follows.

“We will not abandon you. What is human culture? What is human civilization? Thank God for giving us the opportunity to think. The true” cultural heritage common to all humans “is peace and the spirit of mutual aid. It should be built in our hearts and passed down to our descendants “(” The University Graduates’ Society 〔Gakushikai Bulletin “No. 832 [2001]).

Dr. Nakamura is a Christian, but in Christianity it is said that “people who realize peace are fortunate” (Matthew 5: 9). Peace and mutual aid is also a concept that forms the basis of religion in Islam. The greeting of the Islamic world is simply “Salam (peace)”, and in a longer term, “As-Salam Alaikum (May peace be upon you)”, and peace is a creed which believers always have to be conscious of.  Mutual aid stipulates in Islam that the religious tax necessary to protect the poor, widows and travelers is a religious obligation as “zakat”. Mutual aid is also found in Christian “equality” and “neighborhood love.”

In Islam, the object of worship is “Allah,” which is the Arabic word for “God,” and in the Arabic translation of the Christian Bible, God is also referred to as “Allah.” In other words, both Islam and Christianity believe in the same god.

Dr. Tetsu Nakamura was a Christian Protestant Baptist Christian, but peace and interdependence are universal values ​​for humankind. He continued his activities with the utmost respect for the beliefs and values ​​of the local people. In Christianity, it is taught to reach peace while caring for each other, and in Judaism, peace is valued as the daily greeting is “Shalom (peace)”, and Jew’s tzedakah is an English charity, and also equivalent to ṣadaqa in Arabic, and thus Jews have an obligation to help the poor.
