Background of high oil prices-Saudi Arabia opposes Biden’s “human rights diplomacy”
The Biden administration in the United States released from the strategic petroleum reserve, trying to lower the price of crude oil. Japan went along with it and released its strategic reserve of oil. Saudi Arabia, which plays a leading role in OPEC Plus, is reluctant to respond to the Biden administration’s request to increase oil production, partly because of the opposition to the Biden administration, which advocates human rights diplomacy. President Biden has placed “human rights” at the center of diplomacy and has criticized Saudi Arabia’s human rights infringement, including the killing of Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul, Turkey in October 2018 and the bombing of Yemen. There is no doubt that the backlash against Saudi Arabia’s Biden administration has also contributed to the high oil prices.

米国のバイデン政権は石油の国家備蓄を放出し、原油価格を下げようとしました。日本もそれに同調し、国家備蓄分の石油を放出しました。OPECプラスで主導的役割を果たすサウジアラビアがバイデン政権の石油増産の要求に応じようとしないのは、人権外交を掲げるバイデン政権に対する反発もあります。バイデン大統領は、「人権」を外交の中心に据え、２０１８年１０月のトルコ・イスタンブールでのジャマール・カショギ氏記者殺害やイエメン空爆などサウジアラビアの人権侵害を批判してきました。サウジアラビアのバイデン政権に対する反発も原油価格が高止まりする要因となっていることは間違いないでしょう。「日刊ゲンダイ」に記事を書きました。ご覧頂ければ幸いです。
